In the world of luxury watches, Imitation is no substitute for the real thing, especially when it comes to craftsmanship and quality. Rolex watches are made with specially tailored details to set them apart from the rest. While counterfeit Rolex watchmakers have attempted to imitate these details, careful inspection can help you distinguish between a fake and an authentic Rolex watch.

Things You’ll Need:
- Small screwdriver
- Loupe
- 1
Check the back of the watch case. Rolex does not manufacture clear cases for its watches. Except for a few specific models, an authentic Rolex watch will not have any engravings on the back of the case.
- 2
Remove the bracelet of the watch with a small screwdriver to check for the four-to-five-digit serial number. The number is between the lugs at the 6 o’clock position. Lugs are the pieces that protrude from the face of the watch to attach the bracelet. If you’re unable to find a serial number, or the number is crooked or grainy, the watch is a fake.
- 3
Check for date magnification. The date on an authentic Rolex watch is magnified
2.5 times. Counterfeit Rolex watches usually have no date magnification or substitute magnification with enlarged numbers.
- 4
Check for a crystal cornet micro-etched into the watch from below the 6 o’clock position. The coronet was engraved with sapphire until 2002, when Rolex developed the crystal coronet. The coronet is barely visible with the naked eye; use a loupe to magnify small details of the coronet.
- 5
Check for a hologram sticker on the back of the case. There should be an image of a crown with an implanted 3-D effect. The absence of a hologram sticker guarantees a fake Rolex.
- 6
Take your Rolex watch to a certified appraiser. Professional appraisal is a guaranteed way to determine the authenticity of your Rolex
