Cost of five small dams goes up by 180pc in a year

tarbela-dam-cost-highISLAMABAD: The cost of five small dams with a power generation capacity of just 9.5megawatt and storage capacity of 0.46 million acre feet (MAF) has increased by a whopping 180 per cent, from Rs35.6 billion to Rs100 billion in one year, raising serious questions in the minds of international lenders. 

As a damage control move, the federal government on Wednesday put on hold the execution of the controversial dams till such time the cost estimates were rationalised and questionable components of the projects were removed.
